Fresh 48 Photoshoot: What It Is and What to Expect

Thinking about a Fresh 48 photoshoot? Here’s what you need to know. This gentle newborn session captures the small, wonderfully real moments that unfold shortly after your baby arrives, from sleepy cuddles and wrinkly fingers to the first time you simply sit and take them in.

There’s no studio setup, complicated preparation or pressure to pose. Your photographer works around you and your baby, documenting what is already happening while keeping the experience calm and unobtrusive.

At Travaya, we work with photographers in destinations around the world, including photographers who know how to approach Fresh 48 sessions with sensitivity and care. They quietly manage the light, timing and flow, leaving you free to focus on your baby.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what a Fresh 48 photoshoot involves, how it compares with other newborn sessions, what to wear and how to decide whether it feels right for your family.

We’ve chosen not to include real images of Fresh 48 babies in this blog out of respect for the parents and children involved. If you’d like to see a few private examples of what you can expect, we’re happy to share them with you on WhatsApp.

1. What Is a Fresh 48 Photoshoot?

A Fresh 48 photoshoot is a newborn session held within the first 48 hours after your baby is born. It most often takes place in your hospital room or birthing centre, although it may happen at home if you have already been discharged or given birth there.

The style is usually documentary rather than posed. Your photographer captures what is naturally unfolding: cuddles, feeds, sleepy expressions, tiny toes, little stretches and first introductions with siblings or grandparents. There are no elaborate props or sets.

The timing is what makes the session distinctive. Your baby is still in that brand-new stage, often wearing their hospital bracelet or wrapped in their first blanket. A week later, their features, expressions and routines may already look noticeably different.

2. Why Parents Choose a Fresh 48 Photoshoot

For many parents, the biggest appeal is having an honest record of how their family looked at the very beginning. The session can include the details that belong specifically to this chapter: your baby’s hospital bracelet, tiny nails, wrinkly skin, first blanket and instinctive grip around your finger.

It also gives everyone a chance to be in the photographs. During those first days, one parent is often behind the phone while visitors take quick snapshots. A photographer can quietly capture both parents with the baby, as well as natural interactions with siblings or grandparents if they are present.

The result is not a polished version of early parenthood. It is a tender, documentary record of your family meeting your baby, adjusting and finding its rhythm together.

3. Fresh 48 vs Birth Photography vs In-Home Newborn Sessions

Birth, Fresh 48 and in-home newborn photography are often discussed together, but each one covers a different stage. The easiest way to choose is to think about which part of the experience you would feel comfortable having photographed.

Birth Photography

Birth photography documents labour, delivery and the first moments after your baby arrives. Coverage usually begins once labour is well underway and continues through the birth, often including the quieter golden hour afterwards.

This suits families who want the full emotional journey documented, including the intensity of labour and the moment they meet their baby.

Fresh 48 Photography

Fresh 48 photography begins after the birth itself. The pace is gentler, with the focus on cuddles, feeds, newborn details and early family interactions during the first 48 hours.

It can be a lovely middle option if you want photographs from the hospital or birthing centre but would prefer not to have labour and delivery documented.

In-Home Newborn Photography

In-home newborn sessions usually take place during the first few weeks. They offer more flexibility around recovery and happen in the familiar setting of your home, where the photographer might capture feeding on the sofa, cuddling in bed or everyday moments with siblings.

In short:

- Birth photography documents labour and delivery.
- Fresh 48 photography documents the first hours and days after birth.
- In-home newborn photography documents your early family life at home.

None is automatically better than the others. The right choice depends on your comfort level, preferred setting and the stage you most want photographed.

4. What a Fresh 48 Photoshoot Is Actually Like

A Fresh 48 photoshoot is usually short, calm and low-pressure. Most sessions last around 30 to 60 minutes, giving the photographer enough time to capture a varied gallery without making the visit feel like a production.

Much of the session looks like ordinary life. You might sit on the bed with your baby, cuddle near a window, feed them or introduce them to a sibling or grandparent. The photographer may offer a little direction when it helps, but there is no constant posing.

Everything remains flexible. Feeding breaks are normal, shy toddlers are given space and you can pause whenever you need to. The session adapts to you and your baby rather than asking either of you to follow a fixed schedule.

Light is one of the few practical details the photographer may adjust. Hospital lighting can create harsh shadows or unusual colours, so they will often open the blinds, switch off overhead lights or position you near a window. In a darker room, they may use gentle bounced light to keep the photographs soft and natural-looking.

You do not need to manage any of this yourself. Your photographer takes care of the flow and light while you stay with your baby.

5. What to Wear (and What Not to Stress About)

The simple answer is to wear whatever feels comfortable. You do not need to buy a special outfit or dress as though you are heading to a studio session.

Staying in your hospital gown is completely fine and can make the photographs feel especially true to the moment. If you would prefer another option, a soft robe, loose lounge set or simple top can work beautifully. Comfortable clothing in neutral or gentle colours tends to keep the attention on you and your baby.

For your baby, a nappy, plain sleepsuit, hospital blanket or personal swaddle is plenty. You might choose a few photographs with the hospital hat and blanket, followed by a few with something brought from home. That creates variety without requiring outfit changes or elaborate styling.

Older siblings can follow the same relaxed approach. Soft, comfortable clothes work well, and there is no need for everyone to match.

Most importantly, you do not need to look polished. You have just had a baby, and the photographer is there to capture you with care, not judge how prepared you look.

6. Is a Fresh 48 Photoshoot Right for You?

A Fresh 48 session can be a lovely fit if you enjoy candid photography, want images from the hospital or birthing centre, and feel comfortable welcoming a photographer during the first two days. It may also suit you if you want both parents included or hope to photograph an early introduction with siblings or grandparents.

An in-home newborn session may feel better if you would prefer more privacy after the birth, want extra time to recover or like the idea of being photographed in your own space. Birth photography is the stronger match if you want the labour and delivery documented as part of the story.

Try asking yourself three practical questions:

- Would being photographed this soon feel exciting or tiring?
- Do you want the hospital or birthing-centre setting included?
- Would you prefer to wait until you are home and more settled?

There is no wrong answer. Choose the option that feels supportive, comfortable and realistic for you.

A Gentle Way to Document the Beginning

A Fresh 48 photoshoot does not need perfect outfits, a spotless room or a baby who sleeps throughout the session. It simply needs enough space for your family to be together while a photographer quietly notices the moments you might otherwise miss.

If that calm, documentary approach feels right for you, the result will be an honest collection of your baby’s earliest details and your family’s first interactions. If you would rather wait until you are home, an in-home newborn session can tell the next part of the story just as beautifully.
