How to Prepare for a Family Photoshoot in Dubai
A family photoshoot in Dubai feels easy when you make a few smart decisions before the day. Timing, outfits, kids’ energy, and location details all shape how relaxed and natural your photos feel. In this guide, we will walk you through a simple preparation plan so the session feels smooth, fun, and genuinely memorable for everyone.

How to Prepare for a Family Photoshoot in Dubai: Start With These Decisions
Timing in Dubai is not just about which hour looks nice in photos. It is about heat, humidity, and how your kids will feel. A session at the wrong time of day in the wrong month can mean squinting, sweating, and short tempers before you have even started. A session at the right time, in a comfortable month, feels completely different.
Location is not just about what looks good on Instagram. It is about how far you have to walk from the car, whether there is shade nearby, how the kids will handle the surface underfoot, and whether there is a toilet within reach. These practical things shape how the whole morning feels far more than the backdrop does.
The practical stuff is what nobody talks about but every parent thinks about. Parking, nap schedules, snacks, spare clothes, what to do if the kids hit a wall halfway through. Sorting all of that in advance means you arrive calm and ready rather than already managing a small crisis.

The Best Months for an Outdoor Family Photoshoot in Dubai
November through March is the absolute sweet spot. Temperatures in the early morning and late afternoon sit comfortably in the low to mid twenties, there is often a gentle breeze, and the golden hour light is some of the best we shoot all year. If your trip to Dubai or your schedule gives you any flexibility at all, this is the window to aim for.
October and April are shoulder months. The weather is warmer and starts to shift, but with an early morning session both months work really well. The key is getting started before 8am while the air is still fresh. By mid-morning in April it gets quite warm and by midday you will feel it.
May through September is hot. Very hot. Outdoor sessions in these months need to start right at sunrise and wrap up by 7:30am at the latest. By 8am in July the heat is strong enough that kids start to feel it quickly. That said, a sunrise family session in summer is absolutely possible - you can check exact Dubai sunrise and sunset times when planning your date and the photos are beautiful. The light at dawn in these months is incredibly soft and the locations are completely empty. It just takes an early alarm and a clear plan. If that feels like too much, a studio session with climate control is a great alternative and produces stunning results.

Sunrise or Sunset: Which One Works Better With Kids
Sunrise works really well for families with young kids. Here is why. Most toddlers and small children wake up early anyway, so you are not fighting their body clock. You arrive at the location when it is cool and quiet, often with no one else around, and the session is done before the heat builds. By 8am you are finished, everyone is still in a good mood, and you have the rest of the day ahead of you. The light at sunrise is soft and beautiful and the empty locations make the photos feel spacious and calm.
Sunset can work beautifully too, especially in the cooler months. The golden hour light just before sunset is warm and rich and the colours in the sky are stunning. The thing to plan for is that popular Dubai locations like Kite Beach and Umm Suqeim get busy in the late afternoon, especially on weekends. If you are doing a sunset session, a weekday is almost always better than a weekend and arriving early enough to get settled before the best light starts is important.
The honest question to ask yourself is: are my kids better in the morning or the evening? If your toddler has a reliable nap in the afternoon and wakes up happy and rested, a late afternoon session can work really well. If your kids are at their best fresh in the morning and start to fall apart by 5pm, sunrise is your answer. Build the session around your family's real rhythm and the photos will reflect it. If you have toddlers specifically, our family photoshoot with toddlers in Dubai guide covers pacing, energy management, and what to realistically expect from start to finish.

Beach, Desert, Old Dubai, or Home: Choosing the Right Location
Beach sessions are the most popular choice for families in Dubai and it is easy to see why. The combination of open sky, warm light, and happy kids running toward the sea produces some of the most natural and joyful family photos we take. Kite Beach and Umm Suqeim are both great options. Kite Beach is wide and flat with plenty of space, and early on a weekday morning it is wonderfully calm. Umm Suqeim gives you the Burj Al Arab in the background which makes the wide shots look unmistakably Dubai.
The practical things to know about beach sessions with kids: the sand near the water is firmer and much easier to walk on than soft dry sand further back, so keep the setup close to the water's edge. Small children often want to touch the water the moment they see it, which is lovely for photos but means wet feet and potentially wet clothes. Bring spare shoes and a change of clothes for each child so this is a fun moment rather than a stressful one. And pack a small bag with wipes and a towel because sand gets everywhere.
Desert sessions produce photos unlike anything else in Dubai. The dunes at sunrise or in the golden hour before sunset turn a warm golden colour and the scale of the setting makes even simple family portraits look really special. For families with kids who are comfortable walking on sand and happy to be outdoors, a desert session is a wonderful choice. Keep the walk from the car to the shooting spot short - ask your photographer how many minutes it is before you confirm the location. Little legs get tired faster than you expect on soft sand. A waiting driver rather than a called taxi makes the whole experience much smoother because the car and the air conditioning are right there the moment you need them.
Old Dubai - the Al Fahidi heritage district and the Al Seef promenade along the creek - is a brilliant choice for families who want something different. The warm stone walls, the wooden doors, the creek views and the old boats: it gives your photos a character and warmth that beach and desert sessions do not have. It works especially well for families with slightly older kids who can walk the lanes comfortably. The best time is early morning before the tour groups arrive, usually before 9am. An abra ride on the creek is a really magical addition if you have kids who would enjoy it and it produces some of the most memorable photos of the whole session.
A home session is worth considering if you have very young children, if anyone in the family finds outdoor heat challenging, or if you simply want photos that feel like your real life. The photos from a well-lit home session are personal and warm in a way that location shoots sometimes cannot match. They are also the most relaxed option for kids because they are in their own space with their own things around them. Families staying at a hotel or resort have a similar option - our luxury resort family photoshoot guide covers how to make the most of shooting on-property.

The Practical Layer Nobody Talks About
How far is the walk from the car to where we will actually be shooting? This sounds minor until you are carrying a toddler, a nappy bag, and a spare outfit across soft sand in the heat. For beach sessions, most good shooting spots are within two to three minutes of parking. For desert sessions, the walk should be five minutes or less for a comfortable family session. Ask your photographer this question directly before you book.
Where is the nearest toilet? With kids this is not optional. Knowing there is a restroom within a short drive or walk means everyone drinks properly, stays hydrated, and nobody is anxious about it during the session. At Kite Beach there are public facilities near the main beach entrance. In the desert you need a plan - usually a nearby cafe or petrol station - and a waiting driver who can take you there quickly if needed.
Is there shade nearby for breaks? Even in the cooler months, small children need somewhere to rest out of direct sun between shots. Most beach locations have some natural shade from nearby buildings or trees in the early morning. Desert locations have very little, so a large umbrella or a quick retreat to the car works well. Build this into your plan rather than hoping for the best.
Is the location stroller friendly? If you have a baby or a toddler who needs a pram, beach paths and desert sand are challenging. Al Seef and Al Fahidi have mostly paved walkways. Kite Beach has a path along the waterfront that works reasonably well. Confirm this with your photographer in advance so you can decide whether to bring the stroller or use a carrier instead.

Tip: Tip: Keep one small snack, wet wipes, and one outfit change per child in a grab-and-go bag near the door the night before your session.
Beach Sessions With Kids: What to Know Before You Go
The best beach sessions for families start early. On a weekday at Kite Beach or Umm Suqeim before 8am you will often have the whole stretch of sand almost to yourselves. The light is soft, the air is cool, the kids have energy, and the whole session has a relaxed and joyful feeling that you simply cannot recreate once the beach starts to fill up.
Pack a spare set of clothes for every child. This is not a maybe - it is a definitely. Kids and water are magnets for each other and the best photos often happen when a child runs into the shallow water or sits down in the wet sand. If you have a spare change of clothes in the bag you can let it happen and laugh about it. If you do not, you will spend the session trying to keep them dry.
Bare feet almost always look better in beach photos than shoes, but some small children are sensitive to the feeling of sand underfoot, especially if they are not used to it. If your child has not been to the beach much, a quick barefoot walk on sand before the session day helps them get used to the feeling so it is not a surprise on the morning.
Bring a small bucket and spade or a favourite beach toy. Kids who have something to do are much easier to photograph naturally than kids who are being asked to stand still and smile. The best family beach photos are almost always the ones where something real is happening: a child digging, everyone looking at something together, a chase along the waterline. Props and toys make those moments happen.

Outfits for Dubai Light: What Works and What Does Not
Comfort first, always. If someone is tugging at their collar, pulling at their hem, or overheating in a dark colour in the morning sun, it shows in every photo. Choose outfits everyone feels good in and can move freely in. This is especially important for kids - a child in uncomfortable clothes is a grumpy child and a grumpy child is very hard to photograph.
For colours, soft and warm tones work beautifully in Dubai light. Cream, white, warm beige, sandy tones, pale blue, dusty rose, sage green: these sit naturally against the beach, the desert, and the warm stone of Old Dubai. They also look great together without everyone needing to match exactly. Avoid very dark colours in warm months because they absorb heat. Avoid very bright neons and busy patterns because they pull the eye away from faces. For a full breakdown of colours, fabrics, and outfit combinations that work in Dubai's light, our what to wear for a family photoshoot in Dubai guide goes into much more detail.
For fabric, light and breathable is the answer. Linen, thin cotton, and soft jersey all work well and keep everyone comfortable. Avoid stiff fabrics that do not move, heavy materials that hold heat, and anything with lots of embellishment that catches the sand. For beach and desert sessions, flowing fabric that moves gently in the breeze looks really lovely in photos.
A practical tip: lay all the outfits out together the evening before and check that the colours sit well together as a group. What looks coordinated on individual hangers can sometimes clash when you see them all together. Five minutes the night before saves a lot of stress on the morning.

The 24-Hour Prep Plan
The evening before: lay out all the outfits and check them together as a group. Steam anything that needs it. Pack the essentials bag so it is ready to grab. Confirm the meeting point, session start time, and parking details with your photographer. Check the weather forecast one more time and make sure the timing still makes sense. Get the kids to bed at a normal time - overtired children are hard to photograph and a tired toddler at a sunrise session is a challenge nobody wants.
The morning of the session: everyone eats a proper breakfast. Hungry kids are grumpy kids. Make sure everyone drinks plenty of water before you leave. Leave earlier than you think you need to - Dubai traffic can be unpredictable and arriving five minutes late to a sunrise session means losing the best light. Pack the bag with water, snacks, wipes, spare clothes for the kids, sunscreen, and any comfort toys or props you want to bring.
The essentials bag in full: water for everyone, a snack that is easy to eat without mess like a banana or crackers, wipes for quick clean-ups, a spare outfit per child, sunscreen, a small hair brush, and one or two small toys or props. That is really all you need. A simple bag you can grab and go is much better than an overpacked one that takes ten minutes to find anything in.

How the Session Day Actually Flows
Arrive a few minutes early. This is really important. Arriving rushed and flustered means the first ten minutes of the session are spent settling down rather than shooting. Arrive calm, let the kids run around for a few minutes to burn off the arrival energy, and let everyone get comfortable with the space before the camera comes out.
Your photographer will start with the shots that need the best energy and the best light first. For most family sessions this means the group shots and the close connection frames early on, while everyone is fresh and the light is still golden. The more relaxed and casual frames, the kids playing, the candid moments, come naturally as the session finds its rhythm and everyone settles in.
Plan for short breaks. A five-minute pause for water and a snack about halfway through does more for the quality of the second half of the session than any amount of posing guidance. Kids who have had a drink and a biscuit are noticeably more cooperative than kids who are running on empty. Build the break into the plan rather than treating it as a disruption.
The session ends when the energy ends, not when the clock says so. If the kids are done, the session is done. Some of the best family galleries come from tight 45-minute sessions where everyone was present and happy the whole time. A longer session where the kids melted down in the final third and everyone was just going through the motions is rarely better. Trust your photographer to read the room and wrap up at the right moment.
When you work with Travaya, we go through all of this with you before the day. We help you pick the right timing for your kids' routine, recommend the location that fits your family best, and brief your photographer on any specific things to know about your children. If someone is shy around cameras, if one of the kids has a particular favourite spot or prop that helps them feel comfortable, if you have a family joke that always makes everyone laugh: your photographer knows all of this before they arrive. That preparation is what makes the session feel easy and the photos feel real. If you are visiting Dubai on holiday rather than living here, our family photoshoot for tourists guide also covers the extra logistics worth knowing before you arrive.

Relax and Enjoy the Experience
Try not to focus on perfect poses or constant direction. Trust your photographer to guide you throughout the session. Professional photographers know how to create natural moments and will help position your family in ways that look flattering while still feeling authentic.
Allow children to be themselves. Play with them, talk, walk together, and interact naturally. Some of the best images happen during movement and spontaneous moments. When the experience feels fun rather than formal, the final photos will beautifully reflect your family’s real personality and connection.

Frequently Asked Questions
October to April is the most comfortable window for outdoor sessions and the one we recommend for most families. Summer is absolutely possible but requires a sunrise start and wrapping up by 7:30am before the heat builds. The light at dawn in summer is actually beautiful and the locations are completely empty, so if you are happy with an early alarm a summer sunrise session works really well. If early mornings are not an option in summer, a studio session with full climate control is a great alternative.
For most families with toddlers, sunrise wins. Toddlers are usually up early anyway so you are not fighting the body clock, the locations are quiet and cool, and you are done before the heat or the tiredness kicks in. Sunset works well for families where kids have a reliable nap in the afternoon and come out the other side with good energy. Think about your child's real daily rhythm and choose the slot that matches it. A happy toddler at sunrise makes for much better photos than a grumpy one at golden hour.
Al Seef along the Dubai Creek is our top recommendation for sessions with grandparents. The paths are mostly paved and flat, there is plenty of shade from the covered walkway along the water, and the setting is beautiful without requiring any walking on sand or uneven ground. Kite Beach is also manageable if you stay on the firm sand near the waterline. Desert sessions are harder for grandparents because of the soft sand walking, so unless everyone is comfortable with that it is worth choosing an easier location.
This happens and it is completely normal. The best thing to do is stop trying to make them cooperate and start doing something fun instead. Walk together, play a game, tell a joke, let them run. A good photographer will capture the real moments that come out of that rather than trying to force a posed shot. The photos where kids are actually laughing or doing something they love are almost always the ones families treasure most. Build in a snack break and give it five minutes. Nine times out of ten the mood shifts on its own.
Water for everyone, one easy snack per child, wipes, a spare outfit per child, sunscreen, and one small comfort toy or prop. That is all you need. Everything else is nice to have but not essential. The spare outfit is the one thing people most often wish they had brought and did not - pack it every time without question.
