Wait Until You See Those Dunes

Beyond Dubai’s tall buildings, there’s a whole other side of the city to discover. Sandy hills rise one behind another, with soft curves and little lines left by the wind. As the light changes, the sand can take on a warm golden glow. It’s the sort of view that makes you stop chatting for a moment and just look.

Seeing it together can be a lovely part of a family holiday. You might have a child who can’t wait to see the dunes, or grandparents who have dreamed of visiting the desert for years. A photoshoot gives you a way to keep a little of that excitement, with everyone in the pictures.

The trick is to make the outing fit your family. A suitable spot, a comfortable time of day and a simple plan leave you free to enjoy what you came for: those wonderful dunes and some time together.

Why the Desert Feels So Special

There’s so much to look at, even in a view made mostly of sand and sky. One side of a dune catches the light while the other falls into shade. The next hill has a different shape, and little plants break up the sand here and there. You don’t need a famous building for this part of Dubai to stay in your mind.

It makes a beautiful setting for family photos, too. The sandy colours and wide views give them a real sense of adventure. Imagine opening your holiday album and finding yourselves out there together, with all those dunes behind you. That’s a rather lovely memory to bring home.

A desert visit does take some planning, especially with children. There may be little shade, and walking on soft sand can be tiring. A small, well-planned outing can still give you that big desert feeling.

Al Qudra and Al Marmoom: Where to Start

Al Qudra: Dunes, Lakes and a Surprise in the Sand

Around Al Qudra, the desert comes with a surprise: lakes, patches of green and birds among all those sandy views. Water in the middle of all that sand is quite a sight! A visit can feel like a little discovery for children and grown-ups alike.

For your photos, decide which part you love most: the sandy hills or the view beside the water. They aren’t the same setting, and moving between them takes time. With a young family, enjoying one suitable spot can be much nicer than rushing to fit both in.

Al Marmoom: The Wider Desert Around the Lakes

Al Qudra Lakes sit within Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. So these names don’t mean two completely separate trips. Al Marmoom is the larger protected area, with dunes, plants and wildlife that make this part of Dubai feel so different from the busy city. Dubai Municipality’s Al Marmoom reserve information describes the dunes, lakes and wildlife here.

Beyond the lakes, the sandy hills and small plants give you that wide desert view. It’s a lovely setting if you’ve come to Dubai dreaming of dunes. Animals live here too, so a distant sighting would be a little bonus, never something to plan the shoot around.

A little planning tip: An area name isn’t an exact meeting point. We’ll help choose the spot and confirm access, travel arrangements and any permissions needed before your shoot. Dubai Municipality’s protected-area visitor information separates ordinary visits from commercial photography. We check what is required for the exact family session before confirming the plan. This gives your outing a clear starting point, with the right arrangements in place.

Morning Light or a Golden Evening?

The time before sunset can be such a lovely part of a desert day. The light gets lower, the dunes show more of their shape and the sand can glow gold. If you’ve been dreaming of golden desert photos, this may be the time you have in mind. Leave time for the journey so the evening begins with a good look around, rather than a rush from the car.

An early morning has its own appeal. If an early start fits your family, you might enjoy seeing the light reach the dunes with the rest of the day ahead of you. There can be fewer people around, but neither morning nor evening guarantees quiet, cool weather or a colourful sky.

With so little shade, choose for the weather as well as the light. Tell us your travel dates and your children’s routine. We’ll check the forecast and daylight, including where you could take a proper break. Even early mornings and evenings can stay hot in summer. If the plan does not suit the conditions, we can discuss a shorter outing or another setting.

Clothes for a Happy Little Adventure

Soft, light clothes are a lovely starting point for the desert. Cream, pale blue, gentle greens and sandy colours can look beautiful beside the dunes. There’s no need for everyone to match. A few colours you enjoy together will still feel like your family.

Comfort comes first, especially for children who will be spending time in the sand. Choose things they can move in easily and footwear that suits the ground and temperature. A favourite outfit is much more fun when nobody is itching to change out of it.

It’s worth checking the forecast before packing your bag. Wind and temperature can change what feels comfortable, and an extra layer may be useful on a cooler morning or evening. Keep the plan simple, with more attention on enjoying the place than changing outfits.

A Desert Outing with Children

What would your family most love about seeing the desert? Perhaps it is that first wide view, the little lines in the sand or simply finding yourselves somewhere so different from the city. Let us know what has caught your eye. We can give the outing one small focus, with the photographs fitted around the people coming along.

Water, a small snack, wipes and any usual baby supplies are useful things to have close by. Before setting off, agree on the journey, the walk to the spot and where you can take a break from the heat. Check the actual toilet and shade options before choosing the location; they may be some distance from the dunes.

If someone needs less walking, tell us before booking. A shorter approach can leave more of the session for time together. Walking on sand is different from a paved path, so the specific ground and the return to your transport are part of the plan too. You can enjoy a wide view without making a long climb the aim of the outing.

Keep children with you, give wildlife space and follow the rules for the place. Then you can leave a little room to notice what is there: the shapes of the hills, the way the sand changes colour and the view you will remember as part of this family trip.

What Your Family Session Can Feel Like

At first, you may simply want a moment to look around. The desert can feel so different from the Dubai you’ve seen from your hotel window. Agree a meeting point close to the chosen spot, so there is room within the session to meet your photographer and enjoy being there.

Your Travaya photographer brings ideas and simple guidance. The plan can include photos of you all together and smaller family groups, with room for the little things that happen along the way. Tell us in advance if there’s a particular photo you’d love, perhaps with grandparents or all the children together.

If you would love a blanket setting or a private camp, discuss that as a separate part of the plan. We can check what could be arranged separately, with the setting, items, access and any extra cost agreed before booking.

A small session can leave plenty of the day free for the rest of your holiday. You can enjoy the dunes, have your photos together and still look forward to whatever comes next. Perhaps a well-earned lunch back in town.

Give the Outing Enough Time

When choosing a session, think about the whole trip as well as the time for photos. Getting to the desert and back is part of your day, and the journey depends on your hotel and the exact meeting point. It’s much nicer to know those details before deciding how much to fit in.

The current family packages are shown on this page. For 30 minutes, discuss one small spot with an easy meeting point. A 60-minute session can give family photographs and pauses more room. A 90-minute session may suit a larger group or a gentler pace, if the plan and conditions fit. Tell us the group size, children’s ages and any walking needs so we can choose the length with you.

Walking, pauses and photographs are all part of that booked time. Confirm the road journey, any specialist transport and separate fees before booking. A longer session does not automatically include a drive across the dunes or a second location.

One agreed spot can give your family a lovely place in the holiday album. The dune shapes, warm sand and wide sky bring the desert into the pictures, while the people you came with make them yours.

Is the Desert Your Family’s Kind of Adventure?

If those sandy hills make you want to get out and explore, a desert photoshoot could be a lovely part of your Dubai trip. There’s something exciting about finding yourselves in a place that looks so different from home. Having photos of it together makes the story even nicer to tell afterwards.

And if your family would be happier with sea views and food nearby, a beach outing may suit you better. Our guide to Dubai’s family beach photoshoot locations will give you a few lovely ideas. Pick the place you’re all most likely to enjoy. Those are the holiday plans worth making.
