1. Wear something that feels like a holiday
For a couple or family shoot, a few colours that go well together are enough. Cream, soft blue and sandy shades are easy choices. Your favourite colours can work too, and each person can bring their own style. Large logos and lots of busy patterns can draw attention away from faces. Check that light-coloured clothes aren't see-through in bright light or when wet.
For pregnancy photos, start with something you enjoy wearing and can move in comfortably. The same goes for children’s clothes. Bring shoes that suit the beach and the way there; you can decide about bare feet once you see the sand and conditions. If you’re choosing between outfits, tell us what you have in mind. We’re happy to help.
2. Let the beach help choose the time
Early morning and late afternoon often bring gentler light than midday, when bright sand and water can leave everyone squinting. The warm light near sunrise or sunset is often called golden hour. A little cloud can soften the sun too, so a clear blue sky isn't the only good option.
We’ll help choose the exact beach and start time together, with access, wind, tides and the weather for your dates in mind. The sunrise and sunset calculator lets you look up your city. We use the place and light to help agree a meeting time for your session.
Think about the day around it, too. Early photos could lead to breakfast, while a later visit might become the start of a date. Choose an area you would enjoy spending time in, with the walk, pauses and photographs all fitting the time you book. One lovely stretch of beach can be plenty to look forward to.
3. You don't need to know how to pose
Think of the things you already love about a beach walk. The sound of the water, a breeze in your hair and time with your favourite people. Those are part of the shoot, too. And for once, the person who usually takes all the family photos gets to be in them. It's lovely to bring home a memory with everyone together.
Tell us if there's a photo you'd love or something you feel shy about. We can start gently and find a pace that feels comfortable. A little wind in your hair is part of a beach day, and there's room for a quick tidy-up when you want one.
4. Make room for your kind of beach day
With children, share the family photos you would most love. It might be everyone together, siblings or each parent with the children. We can give the most important wishes time first. Tell us their ages and what time of day works for your family, with a little room for a pause if needed. It is a lovely chance for everyone to be in the holiday pictures.
For pregnancy photos, a slower pace and time to rest can make a visit to the sea a lovely way to remember this part of your life. Tell your photographer whenever you'd like a break. For couples, this can be a sweet part of a date: a beach walk, some time together and photos to remember it by. A simple afternoon can be a very special one.
5. Leave a little room for the changing sky
There may still be soft light after sunset. This is twilight, and it can bring gentle blues or purples after the warmer colours. The sky won't look the same every day, and the light lasts for different lengths of time depending on the place and season. If you'd love both looks, we'll plan what fits within your session. Check the journey to the exact meeting point, including the walk from your parking or drop-off point.

6. Pack a few useful things, then enjoy it
Water, a small towel and a light layer are useful things to bring. A brush can help on a windy day, and spare clothes can be handy for children if you are heading somewhere else afterwards. Keep bags and valuables together and within reach when they're out of the picture.
