How much time will you really have in Dubai?

You've landed, found coffee and remembered which pocket holds the passports. The departure board is already counting down while Dubai shines just beyond the terminal. You could chase every famous view before the next flight. The photograph you may love most will be simpler: both of you laughing at the same table, with a recognisable Dubai backdrop.

Choose one part of Dubai and enjoy it properly. Give yourselves enough time to stop checking the clock and start looking at each other.

Your time in Dubai starts after you've cleared immigration, collected any bags and done everything else the airport requires. It ends when you need to head back, with the extra time you've chosen to leave. Before counting a single city hour, check your arrival and departure terminals, what your airline will do if the first flight is late, and whether your hold baggage goes straight to your final destination or needs collecting in Dubai.

Before departure, check the current UAE entry rules for both passports. You may need a transit visa, or you may be able to enter visa-free or get a visa on arrival.

Decide when you need to be back in the terminal, then work backwards. Allow time for the walk to the station or taxi rank, delays on the day and the full journey back. Finish your last coffee before it's time to head back. The metro serves Terminals 1 and 3. After a long flight, a taxi may feel easier.

On one eight-hour connection, immigration and the extra time set aside for getting back to the airport left about five hours in Dubai. Treat that as a rough example, then work out what your own flights leave you.

This is for you if the trip still works with a slower queue or longer ride. If it requires a perfect landing and every connection to run on time, stay at the airport instead.

One backdrop is enough for a short Dubai stopover

Choose the Dubai you want to recognise at first glance: traditional architecture closing around you in Al Fahidi, city towers rising behind you or an open waterfront view. Check that your chosen area is open and look at the live journey time before leaving the terminal. For more possibilities, browse these Dubai couple photoshoot ideas.

If you'd like a professional photographer at a hotel, café or another private property, check the current photography rules and whether you need permission before you travel.

Put both of you in the holiday album

If you're normally the one holding the phone, you get to appear in the album too. Let the photographer take over. Walk together without looking at the lens, then tell each other the funniest thing that happened on the journey.

This is for you if the same person is missing from most of the photographs from your last few trips.

Get more variety from one location

Without changing areas, one photograph can show Dubai behind you, another can catch you walking together, and the close-ups can include the post-flight laugh, joined hands or two coffee cups. That gives you plenty of variety without another taxi ride.

Match the light to your arrival time

If the air feels comfortable and you still have some post-flight energy, take the outdoor photograph first. If the summer heat hits hard as soon as you leave the air conditioning, or tired faces are winning, stop for water and choose an indoor setting instead. If both ends of the day fit your flights, the Dubai sunrise-versus-sunset guide can help you choose.

When the desert fits a Dubai stopover

Think of the desert as its own excursion. It can suit an overnight stop or a long connection when you've arranged the transport and left plenty of time to get back. Some locations need a 4x4 or resort transfer, and one couple began their session with a walk at sunrise.

For a shorter stop, choose a city backdrop that fits comfortably into the hours you have and save the dunes for another trip. Dubai will still have sand next time. It's rather good at that.

What belongs at the top of your hand luggage

At the top of your hand luggage, pack a fresh top, a small wash bag and whatever helps you feel human after a flight. Keep water, breathable clothing and a light layer easy to reach, and consider comfortable walking shoes for the distance you expect to cover. If you'd like to coordinate, echo one colour and leave the matching uniforms to the cabin crew.

An airside stopover still deserves a photograph

In a passenger area where photography is permitted, take one photo after you land, coffee and creases included, and another after you've showered or rested. Together, they can show both versions of the stopover.

Want the tidier photograph first? Before flying, look up live availability, access and prices for DXB Hotel in Terminal 3 or a Sleepover lounge. Showers are listed only at selected Sleepover locations. Ask your airline whether your booking includes a hotel or another stopover service.

For a quick photo together, prop the phone safely with the two cups in front of you and make sure both faces fit in the picture. If you'd rather not balance your phone, ask someone nearby to take it.

Airport light, two cups, slightly rumpled clothes and both of you there can be enough to remember the stop exactly as it was.

Choose the photograph you want to bring home

Before the stop, ask what you'd like the picture to say. It might say, “We saw the Burj Khalifa.” Or it might say, “We were tired, delighted and together in Dubai for a few hours.” If being together matters more, ask for a closer photograph of the two of you, with just enough Dubai behind you to show where you were.

If you take a photo you both love, put the camera away, finish the drink and enjoy the rest of the stop.
