Old Town vs Malá Strana: Which Is Better for Photos?

Prague gives you a lovely choice: famous towers above a grand square, or colourful streets winding below the castle. Old Town and Malá Strana both have plenty to fall for. Here's how to choose the setting you'd most enjoy exploring.

Start with the Prague You'd Love to Remember

Choose Old Town if you're excited about the famous square, the Astronomical Clock and Týn Church's pointed towers. This is a lovely place for photos that bring back the thrill of seeing Prague's best-known sights for yourself.

Choose Malá Strana if you love coloured houses, little streets and a walk that keeps giving you something new to notice. Also called Lesser Town, it sits on the castle side of the river, with slopes, old stone paths and towers appearing between the buildings.

Those are starting points, rather than two strict styles. Old Town has smaller streets too, and Malá Strana has some very grand buildings. Think about the visit you'd be happiest to make. Imagine looking through the photos afterwards and remembering how happy you were to spend part of your holiday there.

Old Town for the Excitement of Being Here at Last

Walking into Old Town Square can feel like arriving in the Prague you've been looking forward to. The Town Hall rises beside the square, Týn Church's towers reach above the houses, and there is something to look at on every side. It's a place where you can recognise a view from a photograph and then discover how much more surrounds it.

The space around you is part of the pleasure. You can take in the whole square, then notice a painted house or the smaller figures on the Astronomical Clock. A photograph here can hold that feeling of finally making the trip, with the city you've been dreaming about clearly around you. It's an appealing choice for a first visit, an anniversary or simply a holiday you've waited a long time to take.

You don't have to stay with the biggest views all the time. The streets leading away from the square bring the buildings closer, with doors, windows and little details worth slowing down for. Our Old Town photo spots guide explores those changes in more detail. The square can be the part you came for, and a nearby house the part you end up loving just as much.

Malá Strana for Colour and a Walk Full of Little Discoveries

Malá Strana is wonderful if you enjoy finding your way through a place a little at a time. The street bends, the houses change colour, and a tower appears further along between the roofs. Yellow and pink fronts, old stone underfoot and the gentle rise of a street give you plenty to enjoy without needing to reach the next major sight.

It's easy to imagine a happy piece of your holiday here. Perhaps you remember the colour of a house more clearly than its name, or the little turn that made you stop and look back at the view. Photos among these streets can hold that sense of being out together, discovering a new place as you go. The buildings feel close enough to be part of the walk, right down to their doors and windows.

Malá Strana has its big sights too. Around Malostranské náměstí, the dome and tower of St Nicholas rise above the square, and the houses give you plenty to look at on the way through. This is a different St Nicholas from the one on Old Town Square. Farther towards the river, the streets around Kampa and the Čertovka canal offer another side of the neighbourhood, with water and little bridges to enjoy.

If that sort of wandering appeals, our guide to Prague's smaller streets and hidden corners has more ideas. Keep an eye on which area you're choosing: the streets up in Hradčany and Nový svět are a separate outing from the lower lanes around Kampa.

Choose a Walk That Feels Good Too

Malá Strana's rising streets are part of its charm, but they also make a difference to the day. A route towards the castle can include hills and steps. You may prefer a shorter walk lower down, especially with small children, a pushchair or someone who needs fewer climbs. Old Town offers a different sort of outing around its main square, though its old paving and narrow streets still need thought.

Tell us about walking comfort when planning your photoshoot. A few places you can enjoy at your own pace are enough. You can have a warm, relaxed session in either district; the district name doesn't decide whether you'll feel comfortable in front of the camera. Your photographer can guide you while the walk stays focused on the places you've come to see.

What About Crowds and Trams?

Old Town Square has plenty of life around it. Visitors gather beneath the clock, look up at the towers and cross between the buildings. You might enjoy that energy, or prefer to spend more time in the surrounding streets. The busiest part can change as groups arrive, the clock display begins or an event takes over part of the square.

Malá Strana also has busy streets, especially on well-used routes near Charles Bridge. A small lane may feel more tucked away, but it remains part of a neighbourhood where people live, work and explore. Neither district promises an empty background. An early start may give you more room, and a flexible route helps when the place you hoped to see is busy.

Trams add another little piece of Prague around the streets of Malá Strana. Their colour and movement can be a cheerful part of the scene, especially beside the old buildings. Enjoy them from a suitable pavement and leave tracks and boarding areas clear. Services and diversions change, so a passing tram is a welcome extra rather than a photo to build the whole visit around.

Can You Enjoy Both in One Photoshoot?

Charles Bridge connects the two districts, so you can combine them when your session and walking pace allow. There is a lovely change as you leave the Old Town streets, reach the river and continue into Malá Strana. The water gives the walk a wider view before the coloured houses draw you in again.

Choose a small part of each district and count the crossing as part of your time. Old Town Square, the bridge and the streets beyond need more room than one compact neighbourhood stop. A crowded bridge or a slower walk can change the plan, so avoid adding the castle hill or another distant sight just to fit more in.

If the river and bridge are the part you're most excited about, our Charles Bridge guide helps you choose the views you want to enjoy. Otherwise, one district is a perfectly lovely choice. There is plenty to remember in a favourite square, a coloured street and some time spent together in Prague.
