Before You Go: A Leaving Gift for Someone Starting Somewhere New

A favourite street, the view they know by heart or a whole new place to explore. A photoshoot can be a lovely leaving gift for someone who'd enjoy keeping a little of this moment. Let's think about the place, the people and the plans they'd love to take with them.

A little piece of the place they love

You know those places that become part of someone's everyday life? The street they can find their way along without thinking. The water they walk beside when they want some fresh air. The corner where you always meet, followed by a conversation that lasts much longer than the coffee. Before they go, you could enjoy a little of that familiar place together, with photographs to take into whatever comes next.

If someone you love is starting somewhere new, a leaving gift can make room for that. Perhaps they'd love photographs in the place they've called home, with people who made it special. Or they might be more excited about pictures in the city they're moving to. There are two lovely directions for this gift, and the person leaving gets to choose which feels right.

A photoshoot is a thoughtful possibility when they'd enjoy the pictures and the experience of having them taken. It can give them something personal to keep as life changes around them. You don't have to turn the farewell into a very grand occasion. A familiar view, a few favourite people and time together may be exactly the kind of present they'd love.

Which place would they choose?

Before you settle on the gift, think about the place that matters to this person. It might be the town where they grew up, a city they moved to for work or the neighbourhood where they've spent the past few years. Home can mean several places at once. The place you would choose for them may be different from the one they'd most like to remember.

Ask what they'd enjoy seeing in their photographs. They might talk straight away about a particular park or street. They might want pictures with the people they'll miss, somewhere that has been part of your life together. Or they may tell you they're ready to look ahead and would love a session once they've arrived. That answer gives the present its own direction.

You can keep the conversation light and happy. โ€œWould you like some photographs here before you go?โ€ is a lovely invitation on its own. If they prefer another idea, there's time to listen. A gift connected with a place feels personal when it fits their feelings about that place, whether those feelings are fond, excited, a little mixed or still changing.

Photographs before the boxes leave

A session before the move can give someone a chance to enjoy their familiar surroundings for a while. Perhaps they'd love photographs of the two of them in the city where they started living together. Perhaps a family wants pictures in the neighbourhood their children have grown up in. Or a friend would like portraits in a place that has meant a lot to them.

There can be something lovely about including an ordinary detail. A line of houses they recognise. The shape of a bridge they cross often. The trees along a walk they know in every season. Those details may tell their story more clearly than the best-known landmark in town. The photographs can hold a little of how living there looked, with them in the picture too.

Share the idea with us early, while there is still room to choose a day that works. We'll discuss the location, the people joining and the sort of session they'd enjoy. The gift card doesn't reserve a date, so the actual arrangements need to be confirmed before booking. Once that's done, they can look forward to spending some time in the place itself, away from the packing list for a little while.

Let one lovely place be enough

It can be tempting to include everywhere when someone is leaving. The old flat, the park, the view, the street where you met and perhaps another favourite on the other side of town. Every place has a reason behind it. But your gift doesn't have to fit a whole life into one afternoon to feel personal.

Start with the place they'd be happiest to spend time in. They might enjoy one small area with room to wander, or a view they particularly love. You can enjoy the view for a while, have a good catch-up and let that favourite corner have its moment. You can tell us if several nearby spots matter, then discuss what is possible within the session time, access arrangements and package.

If a home or a business is part of the idea, mention that before making promises. Photographing inside somewhere may need permission and a suitable plan. You can still give a meaningful gift if that exact place isn't possible. Ask what they like about it: the neighbourhood, the feeling of being close to home, or the people they want beside them. That can help you find another setting they'd enjoy.

Something to enjoy after they arrive

Perhaps your friend already has plenty of photographs of home. They may be busy dreaming about the place they're moving to: the streets they've only seen online, a different view from the window, the little places that will become familiar later. A photoshoot in their new city could be a lovely way to celebrate arriving.

Let them discover what they like there. The setting they choose after a few weeks may be somewhere you wouldn't have thought of from a distance. They might fall for a park near their home, a stretch of waterfront or a lovely part of the city they've enjoyed exploring. Photographs can mark the beginning of living somewhere, once they have a place they'd be happy to be pictured in.

Check with Travaya about the destination before buying for a particular location. We can also discuss places outside our published destinations, with availability and practical details confirmed together. Buying a card doesn't guarantee a session everywhere. Tell us where they're going and what you have in mind, and we can help you understand the possibilities before you give the gift.

Give them time to settle into the plan

Moving can come with so many things to arrange. Even a lovely invitation may need to wait until there is space for it. If your friend is choosing furniture, sorting paperwork and trying to remember which box holds the kettle, a fixed surprise appointment could be one more thing to fit in. A gift they can plan with us leaves them a say in the timing.

For a session before departure, ask about it while there are still possible dates to discuss. If the last days are already full, listen to that. You can choose a gift for after arrival, or give them a different kind of farewell present. There is no need to squeeze a photoshoot into a week when they'd rather simply spend an hour with you.

A Travaya gift card is valid for 24 months. They have time to think about the place and the photographs they'd love, then contact us while the card is valid. The session date is agreed with us as part of that plan.

The people they'd like beside them

Who would they love to have in these pictures? A leaving gift might be a session with a partner, their children, a close friend or the people they've shared a home with. You can ask them to picture the photograph they'd like to keep. Often, that makes the company for the day much easier to choose.

They may want the people who are moving with them in the photographs, with the place they've lived as part of the picture. Or they may especially want photos with somebody staying behind. Both can be lovely. You can offer the idea without deciding that every friendship or family connection needs to be gathered into one session.

Perhaps they'd love some portraits of their own. A move can be an exciting time to have photographs that belong to this part of their life. Tell us who would be photographed and the pictures that matter most. We'll discuss what fits the session and package before booking. The important part is making the plan around the person receiving the gift and the people they'd enjoy having there.

A gift that fits the move

It's kind to think about what they can take with them. Someone moving with a few suitcases may have already made difficult choices about what will fit. A large framed photograph could be lovely in the right circumstances, but it could also be another thing they need to pack carefully. Ask before choosing something big or fragile for the journey.

A digital gift card and a gallery of photographs don't add a bulky present to the luggage. The gift still needs to be something they'd like and can use where they are going. Take time to check that part. Knowing they'd enjoy it matters just as much as knowing it will fit the journey.

If they've asked for no gifts, respect that. You can write a warm message, enjoy time together or ask if there's a way you can help before they leave. For someone who would welcome a photography gift, a card can be a simple way to share the idea. You're giving them something to look forward to, with room for the actual plan to come later.

When a photograph you already have is the right gift

You might look through your pictures and find the one you'd most like them to have. Perhaps it's from the first time they visited, a happy afternoon in the garden or the day everyone finally managed to be in the same photo. If they already love that picture, a small print with a note could make a very personal leaving present.

Think about what would suit their move. You can ask whether they'd prefer a digital copy now, a small picture to take along or something for their new home once they've settled. A photo book could be lovely for someone who enjoys looking through pictures, while another person might be happiest with one favourite. Their taste matters as much as the thought behind it.

A photoshoot is a lovely choice when what they'd really like is new photographs. Perhaps they're missing pictures of themselves in this place, or there are people they'd love to be photographed with before they go. Start with that wish. It helps you choose between making something from a memory you already share and giving them an experience with new pictures to come.

A message for the next adventure

Your note can hold both parts of the farewell: you're going to miss them, and you're happy for what they're looking forward to. It doesn't need to sound like a speech. A few words in the way you normally speak can feel much warmer, especially when they mention a place or detail the two of you know.

For a session before departure, you might write, โ€œFor a few photographs in the place you've made home. I'd love you to have a little of it to take with you.โ€ If the gift is for their new city, perhaps, โ€œFor the adventure you're about to begin. I thought you might enjoy some photos once you've found a favourite place there.โ€ Change the words to suit them and the gift you're actually giving.

You can mention the choice they still have. Tell them if you'd love to join them, or if they can plan the session with whoever they'd like. A gift card can come with a very clear personal reason and still leave the details open. That makes it easier to understand the present when there's already plenty happening around the move.

Making the photoshoot gift with Travaya

You can choose a package or a gift amount on our photoshoot gift card page, then add a design and your message. If you're hoping to cover a particular session, ask us about the destination, group and idea before choosing the value. We can discuss a suitable plan so you're clear about what you'd like to give towards.

The card holds Travaya credit. The recipient contacts us with their gift code and recipient email address, then shares the place, possible dates, people and kind of photographs they'd enjoy. We help plan the experience and match them with a photographer. The final photographer, location, date, package and price are confirmed before booking; a particular photographer or appointment isn't guaranteed.

Their confirmed package sets the length of the session and the number of edited photographs they'll receive in an online gallery. If the chosen session costs more than the credit, they can pay the difference. Unused credit remains until it is used or expires. If your intention is to cover the whole session, discuss that before giving the card and make the amount clear in your message.

A farewell they can open in their own time

If you're paying for the whole Travaya gift yourself, you can email the card to yourself or the recipient after payment, schedule it or print the PDF to give in person. You might enjoy handing it over on a quiet catch-up before they leave. Or you might send an email once they've arrived, with a little hello from home and something lovely to look forward to.

If several people want to give together, the cost can be shared equally between two and ten contributors, each with their own payment link. The recipient is emailed the card once everyone has paid. Allow time for that if you're planning to give it before departure. You can keep the personal message about the person leaving, even when the gift comes from a whole group.

Make sure they know where to find the card. A small mention that it has arrived by email can be useful among all the messages that come with moving. Then let them enjoy it in their own time. They may want to start making plans straight away, or come back to it once life is a little more settled.

Lovely photographs for their new home

After the session, the photographs can become part of their life in the new place. They might keep one on their phone, send a favourite to somebody back home or enjoy looking through the gallery when they have a quiet moment. Pictures from before the move and pictures from after arrival can each hold something different and lovely.

If they'd enjoy an album, professional prints or wall art, Travaya credit can also go towards those as alternative uses. They aren't extras automatically included with every session. Let the recipient discuss what they'd like and choose what fits their home. You don't need to decide the place on the wall before they've even finished unpacking.

A leaving present can say, โ€œI'm glad this place brought us together,โ€ while leaving room for all the good things still to come. The photographs may show a much-loved street or a view that's only just becoming familiar. Either way, the nicest part is giving someone a little space to enjoy where they are, with something personal to keep from it.
