Amsterdam family photos begin with everyone in the frame

Imagine your children looking across the canal while your phone stays in your pocket and you're right there beside them. Your photographer can take one photograph of you together, with your baby in your arms, your older child tucked between you, and canal houses behind you. This time, let someone else take the photo. It's your Amsterdam holiday too, and you both belong in the photographs.

One good group photograph is enough to begin

Start with one photo of everyone looking at the camera while you're all close together. After that, carry on and see what catches your child's attention.

Near the end of one family's long trip around Europe, the children wanted to keep moving, so their photographer walked with them and offered a little guidance along the way.

If your child notices a doorway, join them and ask your photographer for a photo of you looking at the details together.

This is for you if your children would rather count boats and inspect doorways than stop and pose.

Let Amsterdam change in small family chapters

On a bridge, ask for one wide photograph with your family against the canal houses. At a shopfront, stay close when your child finds a detail worth a second look.

Amsterdam's Nine Streets form a three-by-three grid of shopping streets across four canals in the World Heritage Canal Belt. Shopfront details and canal views give your photographer variety as you walk. If your children stop to count boats, one of their grandparents can join them.

Give every age a real way to join in

If you're bringing a baby, leave time for a feed or cuddle whenever you need one. On one Amsterdam family shoot with a six-month-old and a three-and-a-half-year-old, the photographer paused while the children played and followed their lead whenever something else caught their attention. A feeding break could also give you a close photo of your baby resting against you while your older child plays nearby.

Your younger child might choose Mum's or Grandpa's hand for the next stretch. Let your teenager take the lead too. They can choose between a photo on their own and one with a sibling, then pick a canal-house detail they love.

Keep Mum, Dad and grandparents inside the story

You might hold your baby while your partner chats with your older child. Then swap over before you all come together for another photo.

If your children's grandparents are travelling with you, ask your photographer to capture what they naturally do together, whether that's holding hands on the walk or chatting while the rest of your family moves ahead.

Ask for smaller combinations too: Mum and Dad together, each parent with the children, and grandparents with the grandchildren.

This is for you if Mum's mainly in selfies, Dad usually holds the phone, or you'd love the grandparents to be in the photos from their Amsterdam trip.

The pause can be one of the photographs you keep

Your photographer can keep taking photos during the snack break while your toddler eats on a bench or picnic rug and your baby rests against your shoulder.

If you pause near one of Vondelpark's cafรฉs or its rose garden, ask your photographer to capture some of the park around you. Vondelpark is popular with tourists and residents. When it feels lively, ask for a closer photograph that still shows a little of the park around you.

After the final photo, sit down together for Dutch pancakes, sticky fingers and all.

Keep comfort and changed weather simple

Choose comfortable clothes that suit the weather and let your children move.

For help choosing your route and timing, including what to do if the weather changes, head to the Amsterdam photographer planning page. If you'd like an indoor backup, check that your chosen venue is available and allows professional photography.
