Why this Belém photoshoot route needs a duration choice
Both options include the walk in your session time. The distances and walking allowances below come from a route calculation made on 2 September 2026, rather than a timed walk with a couple. They help explain the difference between the two plans. Crossings, your pace and the places available for photographs can all change how the time is used.
Think about the photographs you most want. Perhaps MAAT and the bridge are the reason you chose Belém, or you’d love to finish with the tower behind you. You can send us a favourite view or tell us which place first made you think, “I’d love a photograph there”. If walking the whole line would take too much of your booking, we can discuss a shorter section before you book.
For the start time, compare our Lisbon photoshoot light and timing guide. Our waterfront visit notes favour an earlier start when space around the monuments matters. Evening can be lovely for the river, with a busier promenade. Check the forecast near your date, especially the wind.
MAAT gives your photoshoot a clean modern beginning
On our visit, we liked the views across the Tagus and the geometric artwork beside MAAT. The nearby pier was closed then. For your session, we’ll confirm suitable places along the accessible waterfront; the plan can work without the pier or the same installation still being there.
Choose the MAAT angle that works that day
- Exterior curves: an agreed ground-level position can put the pale architecture behind you, with space for a closer photograph and a wider view.
- Covered overhang: its underside can create a darker architectural frame when access permits. It is an optional angle, rather than a promised place to wait out rain or wind.
- River-facing path: an open, suitable part of the promenade can bring in the Tagus and bridge. We can work from the established path without depending on a pier, steps or a particular water-edge position.
Rooftop request: the roof is an extra to discuss in advance. Our earlier visit found broad river and city views up there, but current access and permission for your planned photography need confirming before it can be included.
MAAT’s published photography guidance requires prior authorisation for professional image capture. Tell Travaya if its architecture or roof is important to you so we can check the arrangements with the museum. We’ll confirm the photography arrangements separately from ordinary visitor admission. If you’d also enjoy the museum, give that visit its own time before or after your photographs.
Once the position is agreed, you can enjoy the contrast between the pale building and the river. If an angle is busy, bright or windy, your photographer can choose another suitable exterior view and leave time for the rest of Belém.

The river walk makes travel time part of the pictures
In the 60-minute version, this is mainly the way to Padrão, with photographs made along the way and a few short pauses. You might stop where the river looks particularly good or where the light is comfortable. Save the longer pauses for the views you like most, leaving time to reach the tower.
With 90 minutes, you can spend a little longer beside the water before the garden detour. That may mean another angle with the bridge, or simply more time in a place you like. Perhaps you want the river in several photographs, with the bridge in one and more open sky in another. This version gives you more room to explore those views.
The Tagus is an open setting, so bring something comfortable for the walk if the forecast is breezy. Strong reflected light and passing visitors can affect the best camera position. Your photographer can use a closer composition or a different direction while keeping the river part of the photographs.

The garden belongs to the 90-minute version
The garden can bring a different look to the photographs without needing another journey across Lisbon. You might like a wider view along a path or a closer photograph with greenery behind you. Available benches and quieter sections give your photographer a few more choices, depending on the people and conditions that day.
The 90-minute plan includes the walk to and from the garden. Your photographer can choose among the paths, planting and available benches, so the photographs do not rely on the fountain running or one favourite spot being empty. You are making room for greenery alongside the water and monuments.
For 60 minutes, leave it out. Adding the detour would take time from the three main stops, so it is better to keep the shorter route by the waterfront. If the garden is one of your favourite parts of the idea, choose the longer session or discuss a more compact route around it.
Padrão changes the scale
In our visit notes, we preferred the side of the monument where the figures are visible. The camera direction can bring the bridge into the distance or keep the background simpler. That gives your photographer a useful choice when the plaza is busy, rather than requiring one exact place to stand.
Both timed routes stay outside. A few photographs beside the monument can make this a distinct stop, then you continue west. If you would like to go inside or visit its viewpoint, plan that separately so tickets, queues and the visit do not use up the time you booked for photographs.

Belém Tower gives the route a historic ending
Our field notes found the tower area busy on that visit, with bright reflected light from the pale surfaces. They also describe useful river views nearby. Those are good reasons to have more than one composition in mind: the tower when the view works, a closer promenade photograph or the Tagus opening behind you.
For any interior visit, consult the tower’s current official visitor information and arrange it outside your session. The outdoor route does not rely on an interior ticket. Check access near your date too, as temporary barriers or waterfront works can still affect a particular position.
You do not have to spend the last part of the session waiting for every visitor to move. A different angle or a photograph nearer the water views can make a lovely finish. Your photographer can choose among the open, suitable places while keeping your preferred tower picture in mind.

How to keep a Belém photoshoot route inside 60 minutes
Here is the suggested rhythm, with walking included throughout:
- Minutes 0–12: MAAT. Begin at the agreed exterior position with time for a closer photograph and a wider architectural view.
- Minutes 12–35: river walk. Continue towards Padrão, making photographs on the way and keeping extra pauses short.
- Minutes 35–45: Padrão. Use the monument’s scale for a small set of photographs before continuing west.
- Minutes 45–60: promenade and tower area. Finish at a suitable open position, with a tower or river view according to the conditions.
These are useful starting points for planning, rather than fixed appointments at each landmark. If a crossing takes longer, your photographer can shorten a repeated river angle or an optional pause. If moving between the main stops would feel rushed for you, choose more time or a smaller area.
The one-hour version suits you when you enjoy walking and want a few photographs at each of the three main settings. Agree the meeting point beforehand and arrive with time to find your photographer. You can begin beside MAAT together, with the river walk still ahead of you.
What 90 minutes changes
The suggested 90-minute rhythm is:
- Minutes 0–15: MAAT. Spend a little longer at the agreed exterior angles.
- Minutes 15–34: river walk. Follow the waterfront towards the garden turn, with photographs along the way.
- Minutes 34–47: Jardim da Praça do Império. Include greenery, paths and formal lines as a separate setting.
- Minutes 47–62: Padrão. Return towards the waterfront for photographs beside the monument.
- Minutes 62–78: promenade. Continue west, keeping enough time for the last stop.
- Minutes 78–90: tower area. Finish with the open views and positions that suit the day.
Choose this version if you like the garden as much as the riverfront, or would enjoy a little more time at each stop. You can talk about the settings you like, then let your photographer work out the best sequence for your date.
If you need a slower pace or would like regular rests, the full 3.25-kilometre line may still be more walking than you want. Tell us before booking and we can discuss fewer stops. A shorter route with time to enjoy it can give you photographs you love without trying to include every place in Belém.
When the full line suits you, the extra half hour adds a real change of setting: MAAT’s pale architecture, the river, garden paths and two very different monuments.
