One minute you are fixing a jacket and asking your child to please stop climbing the hotel furniture. A few streets later, the Duomo appears between the buildings. Start with a very ordinary question: when does your family feel good? Think about breakfast, naps, dinner and how much walking everyone enjoys. Those little details help us choose the place, too.

Early risers might enjoy being out while the city is still waking up. If a slow breakfast is one of the best bits of your holiday, keep it. An afternoon walk could suit you much better, especially with a teenager whose idea of a holiday does not include an alarm before sunrise.

The photos can grow out of things you would do together anyway: walking hand in hand, looking up at the dome or stopping to see what caught your child's eye. An ordinary shoulder ride can belong in the day, too, if you both enjoy it. You do not have to spend the whole walk asking everyone to look at the camera.

Then comes breakfast. Back at the hotel or at a nearby cafe, you can sit down over pastries, coffee and juice with your photos already taken. You have done one lovely thing together, with most of your Florence day still to come.

The golden-hour walk for families who warm up later

When midday is the only time that works

Sometimes midday is the only time you have. We can choose the place for that hour, with shade and a short walk in mind.

Open stone squares can be very bright and hot, especially in summer. Around the Oltrarno streets near Palazzo Pitti, old doors, plants, shutters and shaded edges can give the walk a softer feel. You still have Florence around you, even when a famous tower is not in every picture.

Shade changes during the day. We check the route for your start time and use doorways or arches where we can pause without blocking people. Bring water and clothes everyone can move in.

For a family who mainly wants old stone, a little shade and an easy pace, the nearby public streets may give you just what you hoped for. There is still the rest of your Florence day to enjoy.

Turn the shoot into a gelato walk

You know that holiday conversation about which flavour to choose? One child has decided before you reach the door. The other needs to see every tub twice. A little gelato stop can give you photos that feel wonderfully like your own family.

If you would like to include it, tell us when we plan the route. We can agree whether there is time during the session or whether it is better saved for afterwards. We check opening times and any use of the shop or cafe; what you buy is paid for separately.

It can be lovely to begin with a few photos of everyone together, then let the walk open up into the little things you enjoy. A bridge to look from, a doorway someone wants to show you, the serious business of choosing strawberry or chocolate. Hands may become sticky. A wipe in the bag will earn its place.

You could choose a short walk around Piazza della Signoria towards the Arno, or spend the time among the doors and lanes of Oltrarno. We choose stops that fit the booked time, with children close to the people looking after them.

Gardens, viewpoints and streets that give everyone room

Think about what you would enjoy seeing around you. Flowers and leaves? Florence from above? An old street to wander down? These places give your family different ways to spend the time.

The Rose Garden: Below Piazzale Michelangelo, the garden brings plants, flowers in season and a view over the city into the same outing. You can pause to look at a sculpture or find the rooftops through the leaves. Flowers change through the year, and the gates have opening times, so check them before planning an early visit. San Miniato al Monte: Come for that lovely high view and the church setting. Plan how you will get there and the walk after you arrive. There are slopes and steps, and it will not be the easiest choice for every grandparent or pushchair. Tell us what each person can comfortably manage. Oltrarno: If your family likes noticing little things along the way, try the streets around Palazzo Pitti. An old door, plants outside a house and a patch of warm stone can be enough for a lovely photo together. This can suit teenagers who would rather have a walk than feel they are putting on a performance. Entering Pitti or Boboli needs its own access and permission checks.

Santa Maria Novella: The patterned church front gives the square such a clear Florence feel. There is more open space here, with marble, pale doors and the great front of the church around you. Toddlers: Start with naps, food and the time they usually enjoy being out. Bring water, a snack and one small familiar thing. A toy that travels everywhere with them may be part of what you want to remember, too. One nearby setting leaves time to look around, have a cuddle and settle in. Teenagers: Give them a say in the plan. They may like a bridge view, a few quieter streets or the idea of ending near a cafe.
