A colourful couple in classical Athens

Marble stairs and grand columns gave this couple a beautiful setting, but it was their bright blue and white outfits that made the photographs feel their own. We photographed them around the Academy of Athens, the University and the historic National Library building. For a photographer in Athens, those different textures offer plenty to play with.

A playful side to the Academy’s columns

The Academy photographs mix the scale of the building with a much more personal view of the couple. We made wide portraits outside, pictures seated on the steps and compositions with each person on a different side of a column. Her blue dress stands out against the pale marble, while his white shirt fits naturally into the setting. The architecture becomes a frame around them rather than the whole subject.

Blue against the University’s warm colours

The University pictures bring a different palette into the gallery. The patterned doorway, painted entrance and terracotta-red wall make a lovely contrast with their outfits. We used the steps for walking photographs, then closer compositions against the red background. There is a nice balance between the two: a sense of the building and its details, alongside portraits where the couple fills much more of the frame.

The National Library’s sweeping staircase

At the historic National Library, the curved stairs and carved marble railings gave the photographs a softer flow. The couple appear together on the steps and behind the balustrades, with a few closer portraits among the wider architectural views. Colour and black-and-white frames bring out different parts of the same setting. Taken together, the gallery is a memory of these two people in Athens, with the city’s beautiful stonework all around them.
