A little time for the two of you, newly engaged

You’re engaged! There may already be a date to talk about, people to tell and a few ideas you can’t wait to try. Perhaps you’ve shown the family your ring and would now love a photograph with both of you properly in it. Or perhaps you’re simply enjoying saying “we’re getting married” and getting used to how it sounds. That is a lovely little stage to be in.

Engagement photos can give you pictures of that stage: the people you are now, the clothes you chose for an outing and a place you wanted to share. You can use them for wedding plans, keep them for yourselves or enjoy a bit of both. There doesn’t need to be a grand reason for wanting a photograph of the two of you together.

Whether a paid session is worth it depends on what you want from it, the money you’re happy to spend and the plans you already have. One clear reason can be enough to look into it. You can also decide it isn’t the extra you want right now. Let’s work through the useful parts, so the answer feels like yours.

When would engagement photos be worth it for you?

Start with what made you interested. Was it a picture you’d love for your home, a photo for the card asking people to save your wedding date, or the idea of a little time together during your trip? That gives you something real to choose around.

A session may suit you if you want photographs from this part of your lives, before the wedding day itself. You can wear something you love, choose a setting that appeals to you and give those pictures a place in the diary. The outing can have its own feeling, even if the photographs later join your wedding album.

It may also be useful if you need new pictures for something you’re making, such as a wedding website. Say what you need before booking. Then you can choose the time, place and package with that use in mind, and check when the finished photographs would be ready.

Look at what you already have too. If your wedding photography package includes an engagement session, find out what that means before paying for another one. Ask about the place, date, length and photographs included. An extra travel session could still be something you’d enjoy, but it would be a separate wish.

And if the money would be more useful elsewhere, or neither of you wants another session, you can leave this one out. A small wedding can include engagement photos, and a big wedding can have none. The size of the guest list is not the thing that decides whether you would enjoy them.

A chance to find out how being photographed feels

If the thought of a camera makes you wonder what you’ll do with your hands, you can tell us that. You don’t need to arrive already knowing how to be photographed together. The photographer can help with simple guidance while you get used to the visit.

An engagement session gives you a chance to find out what you like. Perhaps you enjoy photographs that show the place around you. Perhaps closer pictures of the two of you feel more personal. You may discover that a bit of conversation helps, or that you’d prefer a little more help from the photographer. Those are useful things to notice and share.

There isn’t a fixed point, ten or fifteen minutes in, when everybody suddenly forgets about the camera. You can feel a little unsure and still want the pictures. Give that feeling a place in the plan: a setting you like, a pace you can enjoy and a photographer who knows what you’re worried about before you meet.

If one of you is looking forward to the photos more than the other, talk about it. You might agree on a simple session in one place, with a few pictures that matter to both of you. Knowing why you’re making time for it can be more useful than asking someone to be excited on demand.

Afterwards, you can look at the gallery together and say what you loved or would do differently another time. It may help you put words to the kinds of wedding photographs you want. That is a possible use of the experience, rather than a promise that one session will change how every future camera moment feels.

Photos from this part of your lives, too

Your wedding photographs will show you on that particular day, in the clothes you chose for it and with the people there to celebrate. Engagement photos can keep a different little part: the two of you before the day arrives, perhaps on a trip you’ve been looking forward to.

You might choose an outfit you already love wearing, a place you wanted to see together or a setting that feels right for you now. There can be something sweet about having those details in the pictures too. They belong to your lives just as much as the wedding plans do.

If you’re away together, the photographs can hold a little of the holiday as well as the engagement. You may remember the place where you stopped for something to eat afterwards, or the rest of the day you had ahead of you. The session can give you a reason to make a little room for an outing you’d both enjoy.

Some pictures may be lovely to share with the people who are looking forward to the wedding. You might send one to the family chat, use it beside the date on a card or keep it for a small print at home. Pick the ones you like for those uses, without needing the whole gallery to look like a wedding invitation.

There is no need for the setting to match the place where you’ll marry. A holiday by the sea can have a place beside a city wedding, because both are part of your story. The photographs can be personal because you wanted to be there together. That can be quite enough.

Where might these photos have a place?

Wedding plans give you a few useful ways to enjoy the photographs. You can choose the ones that matter to you, rather than trying to find a job for every picture in the gallery.

The card with your date on it. If you’re sending save-the-dates, think about when they need to go out and the design you’d like. Tell us the kind of photograph you need, then confirm the session and gallery timing. Leave room for choosing your favourite and making the card too. Look at the picture space in your design: a wide photograph and a tall one can fit very differently.

Your wedding website. You might use one photograph at the top, a few beside your story or a little gallery for people who would enjoy seeing more. Check the shape of the spaces in the design. Show us the design if you already have one, including where the words will sit. We can plan for that wish without you needing to learn the camera side of it. Try your chosen photo in the actual page before you finish the design.

A little something on the wedding day. A welcome sign, a small frame by the guest book or pictures in a display can give your engagement photographs another place to be seen. If you’re printing them, ask about the file you need and check the design before ordering. You can keep it quite simple; one picture you love can be enough for the thing you’re making.

A card after the celebrations. You may want to use a wedding photograph on your thank-you cards, or you might prefer one from the engagement session. Keep the gallery details handy while you decide. It is an option you can enjoy later, with no need to choose everything when you first book.

A photograph that stays at home with you. A print, a small album or a picture saved somewhere you can find it again can be the whole reason for the session. It can stay as a photograph you keep just for the two of you. You might love having this earlier photograph beside a wedding picture one day, with all the little differences between them.

You do not need a particular session length simply because you have several uses in mind. Talk through the pictures you want and the current package options. The time, place, final photographs included and delivery date should suit your actual plan, with print costs or other extras checked separately.

Will the same photographer be there on your wedding day?

This is worth asking if getting to know your wedding photographer is one of your reasons for booking engagement photos. Working together before the wedding can give you a chance to talk, make some pictures and share what you liked afterwards. It helps if the person you want to get to know is actually the one doing both sessions.

If you already have a wedding photographer, ask them what is included in your booking. They may offer an engagement session, or you may be able to arrange one separately. Talk about what you want to learn from it as well as the photographs you’d like to keep.

A Travaya session on a trip can be a lovely part of being engaged, even when another photographer is covering your wedding elsewhere. The photographs and the outing have their own purpose. It would not mean that the wedding photographer already knows how you like being photographed, so leave time to have that conversation with them too.

You can use what you notice. Perhaps you’d like more time for pictures together, a little less walking or a mix of wider and closer photographs. Tell your wedding photographer those wishes when you plan the day. Useful communication can come from looking at photographs you like, as well as from making new ones.

An engagement session is not a promise that wedding portraits will happen faster or turn out better. Your wedding has its own people, place and timetable to plan. If meeting that particular photographer is the main thing you want, start with them. If it’s the travel photographs you’re excited about, we can help you plan those as an experience in their own right.

The money, the time and the camera worries

If you’re unsure, it can help to separate the questions. The price, the time you want to give it and how you feel about being photographed are different things. You can talk each one through without having to say yes to a booking first.

For the budget, look at the actual quote and what it includes. A shorter session or a place closer to where you’re staying may change the options, but the price still needs confirming for your chosen plan. Think about any separate travel, location, outfit or printing costs you might add. You can choose an amount you’re happy with and ask what is possible within it.

There is no need to compare the photographs with every other wedding purchase to make them seem worthwhile. If they’re something you both want and the money works for you, that is useful to know. If you would rather use the money for something else, you have an answer too.

For the time, think about the whole outing. Getting ready, reaching the meeting point and returning afterwards all need a place in the day. One outfit and one agreed setting can keep the plan simple. If you want a change of clothes or several places, discuss the route and booked time before adding them.

For feeling unsure about the camera, tell us what you’re thinking. You might prefer a little guidance, somewhere with fewer people nearby or photographs that feel more private. We can discuss a suitable setting and approach, with actual access and privacy checked for the place you choose. You do not have to promise that you’ll suddenly love being photographed.

If you’re planning the session while you’re away, you can explore Travaya’s destinations and booking options first. Then tell us the place and dates you have in mind. We’ll help check the options for your dates and plan the session with you. We arrange the photographer, with the details agreed before you confirm your booking.

Give your session one or two things to be about

You can make the plan personal without filling it with things to do. Start with a reason you like: a photograph for your home, a little memory from a trip, or pictures for the website you’re making together. Let that help you choose the place and the sort of visit you’d enjoy.

Look at photographs you like and try to name what caught your eye. Is it how much of the setting you can see? The closeness of the two people? The clothes, or the feeling of being outside? You don’t need the words a photographer would use. A few examples and your own explanation can be a helpful start.

You could say, “We’d love a photo for our wedding website while we’re in Paris. We like the city in the picture, but we’d prefer a short walk.” That tells us something useful about both the photographs and the visit you want.

Choose an outfit you’d feel happy wearing, then think about the walk or the room you’re planning around. If you’d love another look, check where you could change and how it fits the booked time. Our guide to what to wear for engagement photos has more ideas while you’re choosing.

Tell us if the photographs are for something with a deadline, or if you have a particular kind of privacy in mind. These are useful details to agree early. Your wishes should have a place in the booking, along with the location, time, price and what is included.

You might also leave a little time around the photos for something you’d enjoy together. A meal afterwards, a walk nearby or simply heading back to the hotel with the rest of the day open. It can be nice to have an outing you’ve chosen as a couple, with the pictures as one part of it.

Work back from when you’d like to use the photos

If the photographs are for something with a date attached, start with that date. A card asking guests to keep the wedding day free needs a different plan from a print you’d simply love to have at home. Knowing the reason helps you choose when a session would be useful.

For cards or a wedding website, leave time after the shoot for the photos to be ready, for choosing your favourites and for putting them into the design. Printing and sending cards need their own time too. Confirm the actual photo delivery date before choosing the shoot date; one fixed number of months before the wedding will not fit every plan.

If you’re hoping to have the session on a trip, bring those travel dates into the conversation early. We can check what is possible for the place and dates you have in mind. You can then see how the session and the finished photographs fit into the other plans you’re making.

If you want the pictures mainly for yourselves, there may be more room to choose a date you’d enjoy. You might like having them early in your engagement, or you may have a trip planned later. Choose with the available options and your own wishes in mind. The photographs can still belong to this part of your lives without arriving on someone else’s wedding timetable.

Once you have the gallery, keep the download details handy and save the photographs you want to keep. Then you can enjoy choosing where they’ll go: a card, an album, a frame or a little message home. You don’t have to decide every use before you’ve even made the pictures.

A lovely part of your story to keep

Your engagement photographs can show a little of life before the wedding: where you went, what you wore and who you were looking forward to marrying. They can have a place in the wedding plans, but they can also be something you enjoy long after the invitations have been sent.

Perhaps one will sit in an album beside a wedding portrait. Perhaps it will remind you of the trip when you’d only just got engaged. Or it may simply become the picture of you together that you like seeing when you come home.

If that is something you’d love, you can start with the place, a date and the photographs you have in mind. The rest can be worked through with us, one useful choice at a time. You don’t need every little detail sorted to look forward to the idea.
