A little adventure before breakfast

There's something lovely about heading out while a whole holiday day still lies ahead. In Prague, you can spend those first hours among old lamps and red rooftops, follow the little streets down to the river, then arrive in Old Town just as you're ready for breakfast. So many beautiful things to see, and the day has barely begun!

This walk links the area around Prague Castle, Malá Strana, Charles Bridge and Old Town. Starting near the castle lets you enjoy the smaller streets before they tend to get busier. You can follow the whole route or choose the part that makes you happiest. For a photoshoot, we'll plan a stretch that fits your time and how much you'd like to walk.

Dreaming of sunrise on Charles Bridge? Start there instead, with Kampa or Old Town afterwards. The castle can wait for another part of the day. It's much nicer to enjoy one place in that first light than hurry between two.

1. Near Prague Castle: a morning above the rooftops

Up in Hradčany, the area around Prague Castle, the morning begins with a wonderful mix of grand buildings and little streets. One moment you're looking at a huge gate. Then a smaller lane catches your eye, with an old lamp beside a doorway and stone steps leading away between the houses. It's the sort of place where you want to see what waits around the next corner.

The views are a lovely surprise, too. Between the buildings, roofs and parts of the city appear below you. There is so much to enjoy without going inside a single building. These little details make beautiful backgrounds for holiday photos, but the real treat is having time to notice them. Early morning can give you more room, although other visitors may be up early as well.

The streets around the castle are separate from its grounds and buildings. The official opening information lists the grounds from 6am, with different hours for buildings and gardens. Summer sunrise can come before that. To see what a morning here can look like, have a look at this anniversary photoshoot around Prague Castle.

2. Malá Strana: the lovely way down

The way down might become your favourite part. Malá Strana has colourful houses, old stone streets and little turns that keep you curious. A tower appears at the end of a lane, or a pretty window makes you stop for another look. Even the walk between Prague's big sights feels like something you'd want to remember.

This is a lovely part of the city to enjoy together without too much of a plan. The river is waiting below, but there's time for the street you didn't expect to like so much. A few holiday photos here can hold that feeling of exploring somewhere new, with no hurry to be anywhere else.

There are slopes, old paving and steps on some routes. If a downhill walk won't feel comfortable for everyone, a gentler route or a start nearer the river can work better. Tell us what suits your group when we plan your shoot.

3. Charles Bridge: hello, beautiful Prague

Then, all at once, there's the river. After the smaller streets, Charles Bridge opens up to water on both sides, towers ahead and the castle above the red roofs. It's a wonderful change of scene. You can see why so many people dream of having their Prague holiday photos here.

On a clear morning, early light can give the old stone a warm glow. The statues, the river and the view back towards the castle give you so much to enjoy as you cross. You may be sharing it with other early birds, and that's fine. A lovely morning here doesn't depend on having the bridge to yourself.

If you're starting at the bridge, Kampa is a sweet place to explore next. Below the crossing, the little streets and corners beside the canal feel like another small discovery. Our Charles Bridge photo-spots guide shares five favourite places on and around the bridge.

4. Old Town: a big view and a well-earned breakfast

Old Town Square makes quite an entrance after all those little lanes. Pointed towers rise above rows of windows, and the Astronomical Clock draws people towards the Old Town Hall. There is so much to take in that you might find yourself standing for a moment, simply looking around. What a place to begin a day on holiday.

By now, the square may be getting lively. People gather by the clock, while the streets around it offer smaller corners to explore. Both belong to the morning: the famous view you've been looking forward to and the little places you find along the way. Together, they make lovely memories of your time in Prague.

And now, breakfast. A seat, something good to eat and a chat about your favourite part of the walk sound rather nice. You've already seen so much, and there's still a whole day to enjoy.

Make the early start easy on yourself

A little planning the evening before leaves more room to enjoy the morning. Sunrise changes through the year, so check the time for your date. Leave enough time to get dressed and reach your first stop without rushing. A warm layer and shoes that feel good on old paving can make all the difference when you're still a little sleepy.

Check your journey, too. Prague has day and night public transport, but early routes may differ from the ones you use during the day. DPP's transport information can help you plan the connection. A light bag is easier to carry along the steps and streets.

For a Travaya photoshoot, we'll arrange the meeting place, route and time. You don't need to know how to pose or which corner to choose. We take care of the plan with your photographer, so you can look forward to the morning itself.

Leave room for a little surprise

Prague won't look quite the same every morning, and that's part of its charm. Cloud can bring soft light, while a little rain leaves reflections on the stone. The day may look different from the one you pictured, but there can still be plenty to enjoy. If the weather makes walking uncomfortable, a shorter route or a change of plan is the better choice.

A busy corner might lead you to a little street you hadn't noticed. A view you love might make you want to stay longer and save the next stop for later. Leave some room for those happy discoveries. For more ideas to enjoy during your trip, take a peek at our guide to Prague's best photo spots.
